Someone dropped an old issue of the Herald on my desk last week. I dont know where it came from but whoever it was thought Id be interested in the April 28, 1938 issue. It is fun to see what was happening so long ago. Ill share it with you.
The first thing to catch my attention was under a headline stating an upcoming wrestling card. Women Wrestlers To Appear On Card; Action Promised As All Matches Will Be Texas Style. The story indicated the appearance of two of the outstanding women wrestlers of the state, and should prove to be an amusing feature. Kate Hopkins, of Westport, Minn., weight 133 pounds, and contender for lightweight championship of the world in the womens division, will wrestle Ruth Kelly, of Minneapolis.
Sounds like quite a bout.
The front page contained a number of other stories about Mayor Proclaims Clean-up Week, Finnish Film To Be Shown Here, 4-H Club Sunday To Be Observed, Funeral Held For Wm. Rudolph Bord, some state news and other run-of-the-mill stuff.
Turn to the Local News on page 5 and thats the good stuff.

-Mr. Rovainen of Sebeka was a Mills caller on Tuesday.
And just who did he call on... a possible scandal.
-Miss Dorothy Huntzicker of Fergus Falls visited at the W.A. Miller home for a few days this week.
-Miss Frieda Olson, Mr. Hjalmer Kauppi, Mr. Bud Vaughn and Miss Edna Anderson spent Sunday in Bemidji and Itasca Park.
Put those four together in Itasca... sounds like a pretty good party to me.
-Mrs. Joe Martin entertained the birthday club on Tuesday evening and all the members attended. Mrs. H. Starr won the high honors at bridge and Mrs. Chas. Repola the low.
Thats interesting because I would have pegged Starr as being the better low player.
- Matt Bernu has recovered from slight injuries received when he fell off the scaffolding at the new village hall building, during the wind storm last week.

Watch that first step... its a doosey.

-Henry Wientjes bought a new V-8 last week from Kela Bros.
Speaking of the Ford V-8 there was a Kela Bros. advertisement which read: Heres the car with a quiet V-8 engine that hundreds of happy owners say gives 22 to 27 miles per gallon. Kela Bros., New York Mills, Minn. - Ford Sales and Service - Watch The Frods Go By (its nice to see there were typos in the paper back then, too.)
- Lester Mischke underwent an operation last Friday for appendicitis at the Perham hospital.
Then there was the wedding announcement where Mary Sweere and Carl Polman were married at the Holy Cross church by Rev. Tertogen. The announcement said this is the third Polman brother to marry a Sweere sister.
Why stray too far out of Butler when everything you need is right there?
