May 2020 will be an exciting time for Otter Tail County when Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and other dignitaries will converge on this area for next year's Governor's Fishing Opener.

Thumper Pond Resort in the town of Ottertail, on the east side of Otter Tail Lake, will serve as the headquarters for the big event that will cover a four-day period, from May 7 to 10 in 2020.

"Phelps Mill Park is one location being considered for the community picnic on Friday evening, on May 8, 2020," said Nick Leonard, communications and external relations director for Otter Tail County.

Selection of Phelps Mill Park currently has widespread support from residents throughout the county. They say this would be a great way to showcase the park during the Governor's Fishing Opener weekend.

Leonard said there will be lots of activity in Otter Tail County during the four days before, during and after the Governor's Fishing Opener.

"Friday, May 8, 2020, will also be media day," said Leonard to county board members on May 14 at the County Government Services Center in Fergus Falls. "Otter Tail County will receive a lot of attention from news media outlets from near and far."

Gov. Walz will be part of the big fishing launch at 8 a.m. on Saturday, May 9, 2020, when he and other dignitaries will try their luck at catching a walleye. A shore lunch will be held at noon and on Saturday evening there will be an announcement on where the 2021 Governor's Opener will be held.

"As the host county in 2020, we have the opportunity to not only highlight local fishing. We also will promote Otter Tail County's other travel activities, attractions and points of interest," Leonard said.

Otter Tail Lake was the host for the 1997 Governor's Fishing Opener when Arne Carlson was governor. The 1980 Governor's Opener also was held at Otter Tail Lake, when Al Quie was governor.

Explore Minnesota, the state's tourism promotion office, organizes the annual Governor's Fishing Opener with a host committee.

This year Gov. Walz attended his first fishing opener in Albert Lea, in southern Minnesota. The Governor's Opener was first held in 1948, at Lake Mille Lacs, east of Brainerd.
