Although the Yellowjacket boys track and field team had realistic expectations heading into the State Class AA True Team Meet last weekend in Stillwater, they sure weren't expecting to finish last.

With a roster depleted somewhat by injury and just too thin in certain events, Perham finished 9th out of nine teams at the True Team Meet with 200 points. Mankato West won the boys team title with 398.5 points.

"We thought we'd be able to compete in a few more events," distance running coach Jeff Morris said.

One of Morris' top runners, Eddie Stenger, did not compete to rest an injured foot before Sections this week.

"We might have run a few things differently if we had Eddie in there," Morris said.

The Jackets best finish was in the 3200m run, where Kevin Lachowitzer and Justin Tellinghuisen finished 1-2. Lachowitzer's time was 9:46.71, nearly 20 seconds ahead of Tellinghuisen in second place.

The team's next best individual finish was turned in by Nathan Lillis, who finished second in the pole vault by clearing 13'6".

Perham also did well in the hurdling events. Jake Hunter finished fifth in the 300m hurdles and sixth in the 110m hurdles. Kurt Weber was 8th in the 300m and 15th in the 110m.

Girls win HOL

Led by a record setting performance by Brittany Gigstead, the Jacket girls won the Heart O' Lakes Conference title.

Gigstead set the conference record in the 1600m with a time of 5:14.62. She also won the 400m dash (59.43) as the Lady Jackets won a total of six events.

Maddie McClellan won the 800m (2:27.55), with Abby Anderson finishing second. McClellan was second to Gigstead in the 1600m run as well.

Becca Peloquin won the 100m hurdles (17.86) with Danielle Refsland finishing as the runner-up. Elisa Moenkedick won the discus with a toss of 108'11" and Heather Schultz had a first place shot put throw of 33'4" with Moenkedick finishing third.

The boys finished fourth at the HOL with Lachowitzer (1600m), Stenger (3200m) and Lillis (pole vault) earning conference championships.

Boys boys and girls teams took it easy Thursday in Barnesville. The girls, led by wins from Gigstead (1600), Anderson (3200) and Moenkedick (shot put and discus), finished second. The boys finished in fourth place.

Sub-Sections

Perham will host a 6A Sub-Section Meet at Meinhover Field today (May 24). Field and running events start at 4:30 p.m. Top finishers will advance to the 6A Championships on May 31 at MSU-Moorhead.
