Although members of the Perham boys track and field team are proud to have won the Section 8AA True Team Track Meet last week in Park Rapids, they know it doesn't mean their the best team in the state, or that their season is over.
Far from it.
It's just one step in part of a bigger picture.

"It's a big deal (to be going to True Team State)," said junior distance runner Kevin Lachowitzer. "But it's just a tune -up."
It's almost a conscious among the team that they don't have much of a shot at the State True Team title. They will probably be the smallest Class AA team in the field.
True Team events allow two participants per team, per event. You can't stack the field in events your strong in, like in regular invites. So you have to be solid in all events to compete. Also, they are not sponsored or run by the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL). It's run by the State Coaches Association.
Perham is stocked in distance races, hurdles, throwing events. But they aren't strong in the sprints or jumps. They don't quite have what it takes to compete with teams from Mankato and the Metro Area.
"I think we'd like to make a statement in the events we're strong in," said junior distance runner Justin Tellinghuisen.
All agree that bigger things are still ahead. This is a "tune-up" for the MSHSL Sub-Section and Sections Meets.
"This will get us prepared for next week (Sub-Sections are May 24)," said senior Nick Adkins. "Sub-Sections and Sections are much more important."
Still, they like the idea of surprising some of the big boys.

"I'm looking forward to the competition," said hurdler Jake Hunter. "It will be cool to see how I stack up."
Fellow hurdler Kurt Weber added he though a top-three finish was possible.
"I'm not intimidated about going against bigger schools," added senior Bryan Paridon. "I think there are some events where we can compete with any of them."
The True Team State Meet will be held at Stillwater High School on May 19. The Class AA events begin at 3 p.m.
Most of the boys will take it easy, if they participate at all today (May 17) as the team competes at the Barnesville Invite.
Daggett Invite
Nathan Lillis set a team and Daggett Invite record in the pole vault last Thursday in Frazee. He passed the record set by Josh Bennet by clearing 13 feet, 8 inches.
"That was pretty cool," Lillis said of reaching that height. "My goal is to get past 14 feet. Right now it's all about having the confidence to get there. It's all in my head."

Lillis' first place finish wasn't quite enough to get the Jackets past the hometown team as Frazee won the boys team title. Perham was second.
The boys 4x800 relay team of Lachowitzer, Eddie Stenger, Tellinghuisen and Tristan Covington also set a meet record with a time of 8:24.99.
Brittany Gigstead also set a meet record with a time of 58.34 in the 400m dash, leading the girls to the team title.
Alli Januszewski (800m), Abby Anderson (1600m), Danielle Refsland (110m hurdles) and Elisa Moenkedick (discus) also had first place finishes.
Sub-Section at Meinhover
Meinhover Field in Perham will be the site of one of four Section 6A Sub-Section Track meets on Thursday, May 24. Admission will be $6 for adults, $4 for students.
