March is Minnesota Food Share Month and the Perham Community Food Shelf is participating in the state-wide effort to feed the hungry. March food drives have been scheduled in Perham at Curves for Women, Dean's Country Market, Pamida, Service Food, and Wild Goose.

You may also bring donations to your place of worship or on Monday mornings, directly to the Food Shelf located at 501 4th Avenue NW.

The Perham Community Food Shelf serves people in need living in the Perham-Dent school district. In 2005, 362 households with 520 children were helped by donations to the Food Shelf. Yes, there are people in our community who would go hungry if not for the Food Shelf.

Food Shelf director, Alana Herrmann has compiled a top ten list of good donation items:

1. canned vegetables and fruits

3. soups and chili

4. canned or boxed main dishes

5. mac & cheese, elbow macaroni, pasta products

10. toothpaste, shampoo, hand soap, dish soap

Hermann suggest donors think twice before pulling a donation from the cupboard.

You're searching in your pantry for a donation. Surely someone will eat this can of beets that's been in the cupboard for a couple of years. Right? Wrong. Before you make donations, be sure it's something you or your family would eat.

In March extra funds are received for all donations of money and pounds of food. For each dollar donated, the Perham Community Food Shelf may purchase many more dollars worth of food from the central food bank.

Hermann thanks the community for past and future support.
