Perham girls tied for first heading into the conference championship

It's a two-team battle for the Heart O' Lakes Girls Golf Championship. With only the HOL 18-hole Championship on May 21 at Wildflower G.C remaining, Perham and Pelican Rapids are deadlocked with 12 conference points.

They are miles ahead their nearest competitors, Agassiz Valley (29) and Hawley/Ulen-Hitterdal (30).

The top-two teams kept pace with each other on Monday as the girls played a conference doubleheader, playing nine holes at Hawley and nine at Barnesville. Perham won at Barnesville with a score of 185, three strokes ahead of Pelican Rapids.

Nikki Mattfeld led the Jackets, finishing third overall with a 44. Abby Huebsch was fourth with a 45 and Holly Karkela was tied for fifth with a 47.

The finishes were reversed at Hawley. Pelican Rapids was on top with a 182. Perham was four strokes back wit ha 186.

Jenine Estlick tied for fourth overall with a 44. Leah Richter was sixth with a 46.

The Vikings Nicole Hanson won both events, shooting a 41 at Hawley and a 42 at Barnesville.

Last Thursday, Perham finished fourth (383) at the 18-hole Menahga Invite at Blueberry Pines G.C. Detroit Lakes won the team title with a 328. Cydney Hasselberg of Staples-Motley was medalist with a 75. Jeanna Kratzke turned in Perham's low score with a 92.

Boys getting more consistent

The boys top scorers are starting to hit the low 40's and even dipping into the 30's as they tone their games with sections approaching. They shot a season-low 163 in finishing third at the HOL at Frazee on Monday.

D-G-F won the event with a 160. Agassiz Valley was second with a 161.

The Jackets were led by Nick Dockter's 39.

"We played much more consistently today," head coach Jeff Tweeton said. "We need to keep that going now."

Perham finished fourth with a 169 last Thursday in the HOL at Barnesville. Agassiz Valley shot a 149 to finish first.

Barry Nelson led Perham with a 38.

The Jackets are in fourth place (36 points) heading with one HOL event, today at D-G-F, before the HOL Championships on Monday. Hawley/Ulen-Hitterdal and Agassiz Valley are tied for first with 16 points. D-G-F is third with 28.

The 6A Sub-Section Meet will be at Pebble Lake G.C. in Fergus Falls May 24.
