Perham hikes tax levy 2.9 percent

The city of Perham will collect about $30,000 more in local taxes in 2009.

The levy will be about 2.87 percent higher than 2008, with tax collections totalling $1.082 million. This compares to $1.052 million last year.

The city's general fund will increase nearly $40,000 in 2009. The general fund, which includes wages and salaries, represents the largest share of annual operational costs. The general fund will be at $296,970--compared to $257,975 last year.

Library funding increased from $111,534 to $115,005. Economic development funding was level, at $35,000.

Fire department increased less than $2,000, to $75,940.

Debt payments will total $383,000 in 2009. The outstanding debt includes five separate improvement bonds, as well as $58,000 for the library and $65,000 in repayments for the firehall expansion project.

The tax abatement to Tuffy's Pet Food will be substantially lower this year, at $13,987. Last year, Tuffy's received a $36,100 tax abatement.
