A smothering defensive effort in the first half allowed the Yellowjacket girls basketball team to pick up a 59-45 win over Pelican Rapids last week in the season opener for both teams.

Perham outscored the Vikings in the first half, 28-15 as Pelican Rapids made just four field goal before halftime.

Strong guard play in the by Tara Sailer and freshman Steph Miller held Pelican Rapids off in the second half. Miller scored all eight of her points in the final 18 minutes. Sailer finished with nine points, seven rebounds, six steals and five assists.

Elisa Moenkedick led the Jackets with 12 points and eight boards. Becca Peloquin had eight points, seven rebounds and five steals in the win.

Perham's game against Ulen-Hitteral on Dec. 4 was postponed due to snow. The game will be made-up on Thurs. Dec. 20 at Prairie Wind Gymnasium.

The Lady Jackets will head to Breckenridge on Dec. 7. Perham won both meetings against the Cowgirls last season.

Perham will return home on Dec. 10 to face Hawley. It will be Blues Brothers Night at Prairie Wind Gymnasium as the Jackets try to stop a three-game losing streak to Hawley.
