When the fall sports schedules come out each year, the Perham/New York Mills swim team circles three dates: the Mid-State Conference Meet, the Section 8A?Meet, and their dual meet with Detroit Lakes. Since the Yellow Jackets are unable to host their own meet, their meet at the BTD?Aquatic Center in Detroit Lakes becomes their one "home" meet, where they honor parents and seniors.

This year's senior class, as well as the rest of the team, gave their parents a big treat with an 86-84 win Tuesday night at the DLCCC.

The Lakers had a 25-21 lead after five events, and the meet was tied heading into the final event, the 400m freestyle relay.

After two legs of the relay, the Lakers had a solid lead. But Perham's third swimmer, Erika Conlin, made up the difference, and by the time she handed off to Kaila Formanek for the final leg, the Jackets were ahead. Formanek wasn't about to let that lead slip away.

"I was thinking I?had a chance to win it for the whole team," Formanek said. "I knew I?had to give it my all. I?figured, if I?can't walk after, who cares? I went as hard as I?could and we won. And now my legs are dead and I can't walk, but it was so worth it."

The meet was close all the way, but Perham's depth was enough to overcome D.L.'s top swimmers.

Last year, Perham and D.L. tied, 90-90, despite Perham not getting any points in diving. This year, D.L. won nine of the 12 events, including first place finishes in the first eight events. But Perham prevailed with depth. They had second and third place finishes in four events, and when they finally won an event, the 200 free relay, they also took second, giving them 12 points. A first place finish by Kelsey Kratzke in the 11th event, the 100m breaststroke, put Perham in position to win the meet with a first place finish in the 400 relay.

It's just the second win ever for Perham over D.L. in a dual meet. They also won in 2006.

"It was so disappointing not to win last year," Formanek said. "We just had to win this time."

No repeat in Park Rapids

The Perham/New York Mills swim team went to Park Rapids looking for consecutive wins against their Mid-State rival. The Yellow Jackets beat the Panthers last year, 105-75, for their first ever dual meet win against Park Rapids.

The Panthers were just a little too strong at the top of their line-up, and came away with a 104-82 win. Park Rapids won eight of the 12 events, including all three relay events.

Kelsey Kratzke was a two-time winner, taking first in the 200m individual medley (2:32.52) and the 100m breaststroke (1:15.89).

Formanek came in first in the 50m freestyle (27.86) and Leah Richter was first in the 100 free (1:00.08).
