Voracious readers at Perhams Prairie Wind Middle School not only achieved a new reading record--they made a mockery of their own principal.

Actually, Principal Kitty Krueger sealed her fate when she boldly challenged her 5-8 grade students to break the 10,000 point goal.

She promised, if the students hit the February I Love to Read Month objective, she would dress up like a yellowjacket, have her hair painted, and sing the school song in front of the entire student body and staff.

Students not only reached, but exceeded the goal--with 11,508 points total.

The day of reckoning for Krueger was Friday, March 3. And she lived up to her end of the bargain, as the students and staff howled with laughter.

Earning more than 10,000 points is quite a feat, noted library assistant Elaine Beller.

Most books will net 3-5 points, she said, but students must take a short quiz about the book. Additional points are awarded based on the results of the quiz.

Points also vary based on reading level.

A book like Charlottes Web might be worth 5 points. Accelerated reading material, like the Harry Potter series, can by worth 40 points per book.

This is the first year the middle school has made reading month a competitive campaign. Based on the success, it will surely be done next year.

Class winners were:

Sue Jones 8th grade class.

Tricia Irvines 7th grade class.

Dave Cresaps 6th grade class.

Kelly Collettes 5th grade class.

Grade 5 students showed up their upperclassmen, scoring the most points at 1,000.42.

Any student achieving 20 points was eligible for a bowling party, which will be March 9-10 at the Cactus.
