Quilting enthusiasts will come together across the state Sept. 30 for the first-ever national Quilt Pink Day, a fundraising event to benefit the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

Hosting the event in the region will be 21 Minnesota and Wisconsin quilt shops and Minnesota Quilters Inc., a statewide quilting organization.

Perham will be well represented for the event, as local quilters have been creating and contributing squares for Quilt Pink. Among the contributors have been a crew of quilters from the Perham Memorial Hospital and Home.

On Quilt Pink Day, quilters across the area will make pink quilts to send to Better Homes and Gardens American Patchwork & Quilting magazine for an online auction slated for May 2007. Proceeds from the auction will be presented to the Komen Foundation the following October.

"This is a very special event where we can really make a difference. It's an easy way to help those we love the most - making quilts and sharing the dream that we will see a cure for breast cancer in our lifetimes." said Perham's Bay Window Quilt Shop owner Sarah Hayden.

Volunteers are invited to help sew at Bay Window on Sept. 30.

Hayden said that eight to ten quilts will be contributed from this area. Nationwide, organizers are predicting as many as 5,000 quilts will be created and auctioned for the breast cancer foundation.

Local quilters will contribute at least 200 squares to the locally-made quilts, said Hayden.

"It's amazing how much quilting touches people's lives," said Hayden. "One of four adults has some connection to quilting--through grandparents, parents, or other relatives. It's something that is passed down."

At the Mall of America Sept. 30, Minnesota Quilt Pink organizers will be on hand to assist quilters and volunteers in making 20 pink quilts.

The state event will take place in the Rotunda at the Mall of America where you will find a stunning four-story display of pink quilts, an actual "sew-in" with quilt blocks being made on site and demonstrations of the latest quilting techniques.

One of the quilts made by Bay Window customers will be a part of the quilt show at Mall of America and will then be donated to the American Patchwork & Quilting auction.
