When people gather together from near and far, a question often asked is, how were the roads? If nothing else, it serves as a place to start a conversation. After all, you cant ask everybody how do you like this weather? Each of us is on a journey. The road of life has its twists and turns.
If the question, how were the roads? referred to this road, the answer would have very little to do with traffic. The answer would reflect either how rough or how smooth the path has been for the questioned traveler. Some of lifes difficulties are like gigantic potholes. They can affect your alignment and make it hard to continue going the right direction. Others are like a washboard section of gravel that jar ones senses and shakes the core of our beliefs. Every so often, theres even a stretch where the road is smooth, level and straight. Stretches like those are good times to rest and prepare for the next part of the journey which invariably will be hilly, curvy and under construction. Youve probably noticed that the roads most talked about are the difficult ones. As pleasant as they are, smooth roads dont really command an audience or serve to make us better drivers. It is the rough roads that build our strength and teach us how to navigate through our trials. Since God is always at work in us, he often guides us on hard roads. Perhaps it will help to know that these are roads where the driver is the one under construction.
