The funeral service for Robert "Bob" Matthews, 83, Frazee, MN was held on Friday, September 29, 2006 at 10:30 a.m. in Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Frazee with Father Joe DeCrans officiating. Visitation was on Thursday from 4-8 p.m. in the Furey Funeral Home, Frazee and one hour prior to the service in the church. Burial will be in the Oak Grove Cemetery, Fergus Falls, MN. He died on Tuesday, September 26, 2006 in the Frazee Care Center.
Robert was born the son of Clarence "Cotton" and Helen (Schwalen) Matthews on January 29, 1923 in Fergus Falls, MN. He lived with his family near Battle Lake, MN where he was raised and graduated from high school. In the middle 50's, Bob moved to Frazee where he worked as a pharmacist after earning his degree from North Dakota State University. He purchased the City Drug Store from Bill Ebeltoft and changed the name to Matthews Drug. He also began other businesses located in Frazee. An entrepreneur in his day, being instrumental in starting the Frazee Forum with Jerry Brenk and Tom Mahon after Frazee was without a newspaper for five years. He began Zee Lanes with Gordon Nunn, Lynn Theatre, Giant Wash Laundromat, Bob's Café and the Gold Room. He also founded and help build the Frazee Golf Course and many buildings that currently occupy other businesses in Frazee. Bob entered the Frazee Care Center in August 2005.
He was active in city affairs also. Bob served as the mayor of Frazee from 1966 until 1974. He umpired professional baseball for the Florida State League. He enjoyed bowling, deer hunting and was a very avid Minnesota Twins fan.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
