Samuel William Markell Jr., 93, of Perham, MN and Oskaloosa, KS, died in Mesa, AZ, March 24th, 2006. Sam was born in Minneapolis, MN on July 22, 1912 to Clara J. Spindler and Samuel W. Markell Sr. He graduated from St.Thomas Military Academy and attended the College of St.Thomas, St. Paul, MN. He retired from the MN National Guard as Lieutenant Colonel and was a US Army veteran. He worked in insurance, investment and real estate businesses. A past member of Rotary in Perham and the American Legion in Sauk Rapids, MN, he was also a 50-year member of the Knights of Columbus.

He was preceded in death by his parents, siblings Frederick, Thomas and Mary Grisham, his first wife, June O. Johnson Markell in 1966, and his second wife, Mildred Connolly Markell in 1998. He is survived by his wife, June A. Wingert Markell and five children: M. Dianne (Lynn) DeMarco, Leawood, KS, Virginia M. (William) Packwood, Rosemount, MN, Michael T.(Jeanne) Markell, Minnetonka, MN, Patrick J. Markell, Minneapolis MN, and Joseph E. (Mary) Markell, Fargo, ND. Also surviving are 17 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.

Funeral Mass at Cure of Ars Catholic Church, 9401 Mission Road , Leawood, KS at 11 am on Friday, April 7th preceeded by a 10 am visitation. Burial at Camp Ripley, MN Military Cemetery. Memorials preferred to Courage Center Dev., 3915 Golden Valley Rd., Mpls., MN 55422.
