Perham Public Schools is making a concerted effort to improve the quality and beauty of its outdoor space during the next two summers.
With the help of volunteers, students, and summer employees the district will trim, prune, and plant trees and scrubs and add numerous flowers including black-eyed Susans, using a theme of school colors throughout the campuses.
Certainly the largest undertaking of the project will be the North side of Perham High School where planners are seeking help in designing an outdoor memorial for Joseph Schdowski and George Rasmussen, two Perham sailors who died during the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor; both men remain in the hull of the USS Arizona. This lawn monument will be centered off 2nd Avenue at the mid-section of the PHS building. Proper lighting, flagging, walkways, and seating capacity will highlight the area with a bronze plaque honoring all who have fought for our country.
Area military personnel with knowledge of Naval protocol related to proper flagging are asked to contact buildings and grounds supervisor Fred Sailer at 346-1615.
Any person interested in making a tax-deductible donation toward the installation of mast and the flags may contact Superintendent Tamara Uselman, or teacher Kevin Scheidecker.
