Scores are starting to drop for the Yellowjacket boys golf team. But they are still feeling the effects of a much improved Heart O' Lakes Conference.

After a sixth place finish in the hOL at Lake Park-Audubon last Thursday, Perham bounced back with their lowest 18-hole score of the year, 345, at the Wildflower Invite on Friday.

Hawley/Ulen-Hitterdal (327) won the invite behind medalist Adderly Hoag's 75.

Perham had three golfers shoot in the 80's, led by Mike Guehna's third place finish (82).

Perham added a few strokes on Saturday at the Staples-Motley Invite at the Vintage, shooting a 351, good for seventh place.

Crookston (314), led by medalist Jake Sanders' 72, took first in the 11-team field.

The Jackets once again had three shoot in the 80's, this time led by Dan Cavanagh's 85.

Monday, the Jackets played at Balmoral. They finished fourth in the nine-hole HOL meet, and third over the 18-hole invite. H/U-H won both the nine-hole and 18-hole titles (160/311).

"We had five guys in the 80's today," head coach Jeff Tweeton said. "Now we need to get them in the low 80's.

Nick Dockter led the Jackets with a 81 (43-38).

"We have a bunch of good athletes on the team who've tastes success in other sports," Tweeton said. "I think they get a little frustrated by not achieving the same success on the course. They're starting to get there, though."

The Jacket girls kept pace with Heart O' Lakes leaders Pelican Rapids with a second place finish at Breckenridge last Thursday. Pelican Rapids won the event with a 185. Perham was second with a 193, followed by Agassiz Valley in third (213).

The Jackets were led by Jenine Estlick, who finished tied for fifth with a 48. She won a scorecard playoff with Abby Huebsch and Leah Richter, who also shot 48's. The Vikings Nicole Hanson was medalist with a 43.

The Jackets then finished fifth (376) in Fergus Falls at Pebble Lake G.C., the site for the 6A Meets. Detroit Lakes finished first with a 324.

Medalist honors went to Alexandria's Molly Leland (75). Nikki Mattfeld and Estlick each shot a 91 for Perham.

The girls remain solidly in second place in the Heart O' Lakes standings, just two points behind Pelican Rapids entering Tuesday's meets.

The girls may have picked up the necessary mental edge over the Vikings after beating them by by nearly 100 strokes Monday at Whitetail Run in Wadena. Perham finished fifth overall with a 375. Pelican Rapids was a distant 10th with a 469. No. 1-A Minnewaska won the team title with a 307. Individual scores were not available.

The boys will play in the HOL at Barnesville today (May 10), then play the HOL at Frazee on May 14. D-G-F will host an 18-hole invite on May 17 to close out the regular season.

The girls head to Blueberry Pines today (May 10) for an 18-hole invite hosted by Menahga. They will play a HOL doubleheader on May 14 at Hawley and at Barnesville, then close out the regular season at the Detroit Lakes Invite on May 15 at the Detroit Country Club.
