FERGUS FALLS -- Close to 50 people who favor a "Second Amendment sanctuary" resolution packed the Otter Tail County Board of Commissioners meeting room on Tuesday morning, Feb. 25.
This was mainly a show of solidarity since the resolution was not on the agenda.
The county board had announced, previously, that consideration of a Second Amendment sanctuary resolution would be taken under advisement , with no action taken in February.
The meeting began at 8:30 a.m. and an intermission took place just after 10 a.m., following general discussion by county board members on various topics.
Shortly after the intermission began, one sanctuary resolution proponent told board members, “We should have had the right to be heard today.”

Another proponent said, “Each of you five members of the county board will at some time be up for reelection, and we will defeat you at the ballot.”
The regular meeting resumed close to 10:30 a.m. and by that time most of the sanctuary resolution people had departed from the room.
These resolutions are designed to encourage counties to stop from enforcing certain gun-control measures that some residents believe are contrary to the Second Amendment.
Two of those measures are expanded background checks and red flag laws. Currently, those two measures have been approved by the Minnesota House but not in the state Senate.
Otter Tail County is monitoring legislation activity relating to gun laws. In addition, the county will wait for completion of research and guidance from the Minnesota County Attorney’s Association before taking up the issue of a Second Amendment sanctuary.
