Sheriff's news: Car totaled after hitting tree, catching fire

A driver was injured on Sunday, Nov. 22, after losing control of his vehicle, which later caught on fire at the intersection of Highway 78 and Pottery Drive near the town of Ottertail.

The crash happened at 6:37 a.m.

Otter Tail County sheriff's deputies said the driver suffered only minor injuries after the vehicle left the road and struck a tree. Ottertail fire department personnel extinguished the fire but the vehicle was a total loss.

Assisting sheriff deputies were members of the Minnesota State Highway Patrol.

Wall Lake resident scammed

A county resident who lives on the west wide of Wall Lake, between Fergus Falls and Underwood, became a scam victim on Nov. 20.

The person gave out a credit card number in relation to a computer virus scam. As of Nov. 23 there were fraudulent charges on the account of the Wall Lake resident.

Sheriff's deputies told the scam victim to contact credit card companies and the person’s bank.

Many scammers make unsolicited phone calls of place misleading pop-up internet advertisements to try and convince unsuspecting computer users that something is seriously wrong with a person’s computer, such as a virus.

Don’t take the bait. Shut down your computer by pressing control-alt-delete. If you still have questions or concerns, call the county sheriff’s office at 218-998-8555.
