To the editor:

As a resident of Little Pine Lake and a farm property owner in Corliss Township, I support the passing of the smoke free ordinance for Otter Tail County. We have a right to breath clean air.

My family does like to go out and eat and enjoy the local entertainment. We believe in and support our community in many ways. However, if we find that the establishment is not smoke free we do not patronize that establishment. We do not want to risk the health hazard of breathing second hand smoke.

I urge the people concerned about bar business to do the math on a smoking ordinance. Smokers make up 20 percent of the population which means 80 percent dont smoke. Surely bar owners have thought about how many of the nonsmoking 80 percent of the population do not go to bars that allow smoking because of the health hazard of being in a smoking environment.

We all know that smoking kills. My father smoked all of his life. He was diagnosed with cancer at 60 and spent 6 years in the process of dying. A life cut short because of smoking. He missed seeing his five children mature and grow, 10 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. The risk of smoking and being exposed to a smoking environment is too great to ignore.
