Kenny Szymonowicz is off to a great start this season for the Eagles varsity track and field team. The junior sprinter took first in the 100 Meter Dash and broke the school record April 18 at the Pequot Lakes Invite. Szymonowiczs record-breaking run was 11.06. The previous record was 11.20, set by Mark Schik in 1980.
High flying Ted Rud continued his dominance in the field for the Eagles by winning three events at the Pequot meet. Rud took first in the High Jump (6-4); Triple Jump (24-4.25); Long Jump (20-3). In winning the three events the returning state champion in the Triple Jump and Long Jump scored his 1,000th career team point for the Eagles. He is the first to reach the milestone in NY Mills track & field history. Rud is headed to NDSU next fall and will compete for the Bison track and field team.
For the girls, the 4x200 Meter Relay team (Allison Sleiter, Courtney Detwiler, Jessica Irwin and Bobbi Smith) placed first in Pequot. Bobbi Smith also placed first in the Long Jump (14-9).
Szymonowicz and Rud followed up the Pequot performance with the same in Pillager on April 20. Szymonowicz again took first in both the 100 and 200 Meter Dash, as well as the 4x100 Meter Relay (Szymonowicz, Rud, Mitch Campana, Nick Campana). Rud took first in the High Jump (6-0); Triple Jump (43-11); Long Jump (20-11).
Ashley Hagen won the High Jump (410) for the girls in Pillager.
