The History Museum of East Otter Tail County was recently awarded a grant of $1040 to present several performances by actor/writer Kim Russell on February 8 and 9, during African American History month.
Ms. Russell is a talented writer who has recently completed a readers theatre piece, Tuskeegee Love Letters, based on the correspondence between her mother and father during World War II. Her father was one of the Tuskeegee Airmen, a group of African American pilots who flew with distinction during World War II as the 332nd Fighter Group of the U.S. Army Air Corps.
This presentation of the Tuskeegee Love Letters will provide new appreciation for African Americans as they joined the rest of the country in the efforts of the second world war.
Kim Russell, who lives in Las Vegas, has been in the area before as an artist on retreat at the New York Mills Regional Cultural Center. During her return in February she will also give performances to area schools about Soujourner Truth, a freed slave who rose to national fame as an outspoken advocate for the abolishment of slavery and an advocate to establish equal voting rights for all women.
These events are made possible by funding from Lake Region Arts Council through a Minnesota Legislative Appropriation.
