To help promote this years fund drive the United Way of Otter Tail is hosting a "Day of Caring" in New York Mills this Saturday. The event will be held in the chapel at the Elders' Home at 3:30 p.m.
The group Saana Ensemble, also known as Pohjan Akat, will give a private performance for the residents.
The Saana Ensemble is composed of Finnish women who sing pop, folk, lullabies and tangos in Finnish and English. Since the group was already scheduled to perform at the Cultural Center the evening of Oct. 7 the United Way felt providing the seniors, who have mobility restrictions, with this lively entertainment was the perfect way to demonstrate the true meaning of a "Day of Caring."
This year's campaign will kick off Oct. 9 with donation packets being distributed to all the New York Mills businesses and picked up on Oct. 16. NY Mills benefits year round from the many events the United Way funds. Although the United Way is best known for the social and service organizations it gives money to, it is important to recognize other programs like the Mills IMPACT Team.
This year the United Way, through the Mills IMPACT Team, will have sponsored the community Halloween party, Trail Blazers program, pool scholarships, summer enrichment classes, 4H field trips, Art in Your Park, senior yoga classes, the Anti-Tobacco group in the high school and Imagination Library just to name a few.

Last year funds to the Mills IMPACT Team were dramatically reduced due to a reduction of giving from our area. This translates directly into cutbacks in programming offered. The United Way encourages everyone gives generously to help keep this community active and to provide lots of fun opportunities for kids and adults.
