The VFW Voice of Democracy Contest is a national scholarship contest for students in grades 9-12. This year, students submitted an audio and written essay on the topic, "America's History: Our Hope for the Future." Perham had four entries, first place went to Madelyn Tangen and Megan Pettow won second place.

Tangen presented her paper at the recent Veteran's Day program at the high school. Her entry was forwarded on to district judging.

The Patriot Pen Contest is also nationwide and open to students in grades 6-8. The topic for the essay was, "America's Gift to my Generation." Perham had 10 entries this year. First place went to sixth-grader Emily Reed from St. Henry's Catholic School, second place went to sixth- grader Madeline Abbott, also from St. Henry's Catholic School, and third place went to sixth- grader Gary Steeke from St. Paul's Lutheran School. The first place entry of Emily Reed was forwarded on to district judging.
