Womenade Helping Hearts, a 501 (C) (3) organization, is hosting an Annual Open House at the Creamery in New York Mills on Aug. 9, from 9:30-11 a.m. Womenade is a fund raising program that works to provide opportunities for women to make a difference in the lives of children. Now in its third year, Womenade raised over $4,000 last year and has donated funds to the Wadena/Deer Creek, New York Mills, and Perham/Dent School Districts.

The money raised is used to help children and their families with objects they cannot afford. Clothing, shoes, medical expenses, school supplies, special projects as well as lunch and milk money are expenses Womenade has provided funds the past two years.

In 2001 Dr. Amy Kossoff, a physician for the nonprofit Unity Healthcare for the Homeless, triggered a thought in her colleague Psychologist Lisa Herrick. Why not change her annual winter doldrums party into a fund raiser for the homeless? Herrick then had a dream. She saw a plane putter by with a banner: "If you have lemons, make lemonade. If you have women, make Womenade." Believing that as a group of women who have been fortunate in a multitude of ways, this great idea was conceived.

The idea was simple - empower women to help others. The concept quickly spread across the nation after an article about the women appeared in the Real Simple magazine five years ago. Womenade is a grass roots, fund raising program to provide an opportunity for women to give back to others in our communities. The plan isn't meant to change the world, but rather to make a difference in the lives of people. Just imagine how, in a very small way, the world becomes a better place because of generous women like you and an annual project like this.

Anyone interested in this project is welcome to attend the Open House. If you are unable to attend but still wish to contribute, please send your tax deductible donation to:
