Maplewood, Glendalough great winter destinations in 2018

Residents of Otter Tail County, and those who live farther away, can and should take advantage of winter travels to Maplewood State Park east of Pelican Rapids and to Glendalough State Park northeast of Battle Lake.

The trips are well worth it, whether it's just for drives through these state parks to admire winter beauty or stopping to take part in many winter activities.

These locations are popular for hikers, cross-country skiers and others.

At Glendalough State Park, this reporter and family members snowshoe one mile around Sunset Lake with Maggie, their trusty golden retriever. It's not too long and not too short, with beautiful wintertime views of the central Otter Tail County landscape.

At Maplewood State Park, we enjoy the many cross-country ski trails.

Glendalough State Park's trail center and historic lodge are available during the winter months. Both are heated and have flush toilets.

Four camper cabins at Glendalough are available during the winter months, Thursdays through Sundays, and have electricity and propane fireplaces. One is handicapped accessible.

At Maplewood State Park, three camper cabins are available during the winter months Thursdays through Sundays. They are heated with electricity and one cabin is wheelchair accessible.
