The Perham community received its first look at the 2019 Perham football team on Aug. 21 with the annual Black and Yellow Scrimmage at the Ted Meinhover Field in Perham. The Yellowjackets are hoping to follow up on last year's Section 8AAA Championship run and Class AAA semifinal run as well.

Perham head coach Kyle Knutson was happy with what he saw for the first time in a competitive scenario at the Meinhover Field.

"I thought it went pretty good. Offensively, we looked better than we did in practice yesterday," Knutson said after the scrimmage. "Defense was tough to gauge because it was an offensive based night tonight. "

Knutson said some of the No. 1's on defense did not get much or any time on that side of the ball since they were working on the offensive side of the field. He said it was a good opportunity for the younger players to develop in front of the community on the varsity field.

Knutson said the goal was to get out and play in front of the community. Knutson said it's a good opportunity for the community to get a little preview of the team before they take to the field with the Detroit Lakes scrimmages on Saturday, as well as their season-opening road trip to Breckenridge.

The Yellowjackets made some slight alterations to the Black and Yellow scrimmage, working more on situational aspects instead of a full-fledged scrimmage between two teams. One of the highlights of the scrimmage was Finn Diggins hitting Gabe Bellefeuille for a deep pass during the two-minute drill.

"I thought our coaches brought the intensity tonight and showed a sense of urgency," Knutson said. "Sometimes, it is a wake up call for some of the younger kids who are not used to being in that situation. They won't see it Saturday in the scrimmage, so they get the chance to see it tonight before the first game on Friday against Breckenridge."

The Yellowjackets will be looking to fill the void left by a talented senior class from last year and had three players take snaps at the quarterback spot with Colton Hackel, Finn Diggins and Josh Peterson. Knutson said he liked what he saw from all three quarterbacks and they all bring a different dynamic to the field.

"I thought they did a great job. The three guys that ran quarterback tonight did a great job," Knutson said. "Coach Beachy made a comment that all three could be a starting quarterback at other districts and that's a nice problem to have. The good thing for us, whoever is not the starting quarterback can help us somewhere else on the field and that's exciting."

The Yellowjackets will participate in a scrimmage on Aug. 24 in Detroit Lakes before they open the season on the road. Perham starts the 2019 campaign with a road trip against Breckenridge.
