A group of people are interested in reviving the the local tourist transit vehicle now called the turtle tram and we hope that people will support that drive.

The service is hugely popular among tourists who want to tour the town, especially on turtle race days, and it is iconic of Perham, say city leaders.

Like the Perham school’s yellowjacket mascot, the turtle tram identifies the community as the home of turtle races, which are just plain fun, especially for kids.

The former vehicle has become outdated and costly to run, making it unviable to continue.

A modern version of the transit is needed, but help is needed in the form of drivers. Because of the number of people the vehicle would transport, not just any driver can apply. A special Class D license is required.

Without drivers, those interested in reviving the iconic turtle bus, say there would be no point in moving forward with the purchase of a new model vehicle, which could cost tens of thousands of dollars. Though there is no concern the money for the bus could be raised, without several drivers, the vehicle would sit unused and be a waste of money.

The Perham Chamber and other entities spend a good amount of time promoting the city far and wide, drawing people to its quaint and vibrant downtown. And that effort particularly pays off in the summer when thousands of people come to visit. Whether coming off the lake with grandchildren, or families stopping here to participate in the turtle races, many, many people feel the good vibes Perham gives off, and want to come back again and again. As families, they love the idea of relaxing on a short ride about town, some perhaps taking the time to enjoy ice cream or another sweet treat on the ride.

If anyone out there has the required license, would you call the Perham Chamber and sign on for a season? Our bet is it will be the best job ever, and such service will keep the wheels on the turtle tram going ‘round and ‘round.
