The No. 1 ranked team in Class A was the top finishing Class A team at the annual Perham Invitational at Arvig Park on Oct. 3. The Yellowjackets finished second, behind Lakeville South for the second straight year. The Yellowjackets put the pressure on Lakeville South, falling by just two points.

It was a cold day, but perfect running conditions. Perham head coach Jeff Moris said it was the best weather for the kids running on the fast track. He said the course was fast as usual, which is something that attracts teams to this event. The annual Invitational had more than 1800 runners competing from the mini mite race all the way to the varsity races.

Morris said the Perham girls had a strong race, coming off a tough fall at Griak in their last competition.

“We fell last weekend at Griak, and you don’t want to make excuses, but you need to have confidence and when you have something like that happen, you question where you are supposed to be and where you can be,” Morris said. “They were a little conservative today starting out, but every single girl had fantastic finishes today.”

Morris said the team is starting to round into form with the Section 8A Championships looming in a couple of weeks.

“Mya (Morris) and Quincy (Anderson) are starting to settle in. We have to get Liz (Birkeland) all the way healthy. She is dealing with some stuff that we are finally getting her through, and she is returning to form,” Morris said. “Kaia Starzl being on our varsity makes a huge difference. It’s fun to watch them compete.”

Fargo North finished third behind Perham with 107 points, while Pequot Lakes came in fourth with 125 points. Moorhead rounded out the top five wiht 152 points.

Nevis' Jade Rypkema set the pace with a time of 18 minutes and 15.9 seconds. Last year's champion, Brianne Brewster finished second for Lakeville South with a time of 18:19.1. Fargo North's Anna Lien came in with a time of 18:27.1 for third place, followed by Wadena-Deer Creek's Kira Sweeney with a time of 18:38.0. Pequot Lakes Calia Chaney was fifth at 18:45.6.

Perham's Aspen Rohde was the top finisher for the Yellowjackets. The eighth grade runner came across the finish line with a time of 19:04.2 for 10th place. Perham had three in the top 20 and six in the top 25.
