Perham girls second at Olson Invitational

The Perham girls cross country team traveled to the Whitetail Run Golf Course in Wadena on Sept. 3.

For the second straight meet, the top-ranked Yellowjackets finished second out of the three teams in the meet. Staples-Motley came out of the gates quickly and cruised to the first place finish. The Cardinals finished with 23 points, capturing three of the top five spots on their way to the team win. Perham finished second with 44 points, while Wadena-Deer Creek was third with 66 points.

Staples-Motley’s Kyanna Burton took the lead early and held off Wadena-Deer Creek’s Kira Sweeney for the win. Burton posted a time of 20 minutes and 14.4 seconds for first place honors. Staples-Motley’s Aften Robinson came in third at 21:12.7, just behind Sweeney, who came in with a time of 20:43.1.

Kaia Starzl was the top finishing Yellowjacket. Starzl came in fourth place overall. She finished with a time of 21:46.5. Staples-Motley’s Ashley Robben rounded out the top five with a time of 21:47.0.

Quincy Anderson followed for Perham in sixth place. Anderson crossed the finish line with a time of 22:03.6. Gracie Morris was the next Yellowjacket across the line in 10th place. She finished with a time of 22:15.8. Morris led a group of Yellowjackets across the line. Liz Birkeland followed in 11th place at 22:19.5, while Mya Morris was 12th at 22:22.3. Lauryn Rustad finished in 13th place with a time of 22:28.3.

Mia Lung crossed the line in 15th place for Perham with a time of 22:50.5, while Aspen Rohde came in 16th at 22.53.0. Stella Strong followed with a time of 23:15.1, while Emily VanWatermulen rounded out the pack for Perham with a time of 23:23.9 for 18th place.

The Yellowjackets are back in action when they run on Sept. 10 at Detroit Lakes. The varsity races are set to begin at 6 and 6:40 p.m.
