Bruggeman steps down as Pelican Rapids boys basketball coach
FARGO - Pelican Rapids boys basketball coach Doug Bruggeman said Monday he was stepping down as head coach and will serve as an assistant for former assistant and new head coach John Gullingsrud.
"With my son Casey looking to get back on the court for the (Concordia) Cobbers, after sitting out this past year with a knee injury and with (younger son) Ryan heading down to (Southwest Minnesota State) to start his college basketball career, I stuck with my priority of being a dad first and a coach second and will now be looking to support my boys from the stands with my wife Sue," Bruggeman said.
Next year, the Yellowjackets boys basketball team will face a coach who knows Perham sports. Gullingsrud was the former head girls basketball coach at Perham until the 2011-12 season. Gullinsrud was 50-27 in three seasons.
Bruggeman was 37-17 in two seasons as head coach of the Pelican Rapids' boys basketball team. He was an assistant coach under Brad Strand for five years with the boys basketball team, including the 2008-09 seasons when the Vikings won the Minnesota Class 2A state title. Bruggeman was also 140-94 with one section championship in 10 seasons coaching the Vikings' girls basketball team from 1998-08.
