SB: Yellowjackets, Panthers combine for 50 runs in doubleheader split

Perham-The Perham Yellowjackets and the Park Rapids Panthers brought their hitting shoes to Arvig Park on Friday afternoon for a Mid-State Conference doubleheader in Perham.

The teams combined for 50 runs in two games. The Yellowjackets scored 15 runs in a walk-off, 15-14, victory over Park Rapids.

Park Rapids rallied for three late runs in game two, earning a 12-9 victory over the Yellowjackets.

Game one featured a serious of rallies, Park Rapids opened with four runs in the first, and three in the second racing to a 7-0 lead.

The Yellowjackets answered with 13 straight runs, taking a 13-7 lead in the fourth inning.

Once again, it was the Panthers turn, scoring five runs in the fifth and two in the sixth, taking a 14-13 lead. The Yellowjackets tied the game in the bottom of the sixth, and Morgan Byer delivered a walk-off single in the seventh, lifting the ‘Jackets to the 15-14 win.

Allie Doll had one of several big hits for the Yellowjackets. She hit a grand slam in the nine-run fourth inning for Perham.

Doll finished with three hits, four runs batted in and two runs scored.

Brittany Miller, Annie Ingebrand and Mattie Scheidecker each had two hits.

Morgan Byer had three hits, three runs batted in and three runs scored for the Yellowjackets.

Sydney Bynum led the way for Park Rapids at the plate. Bynum had four hits, drove in six runs and scored four runs. Bynum hit a bases clearing double in the first, two-run home run in the second, a double in the fifth and a solo home run in the sixth.

Doll picked up the win on the mound; she battled through, and worked out of a tough jam in the seventh.

Bynum reached on an error, reaching third on the play. Doll and Brooke Jerger found themselves in a battle at the plate. Doll eventually struck out Jerger, leaving Bynum standing at third.

That set things up for the bottom of the inning for the Yellowjackets.

Ciarra Olson drew a leadoff walk. Jaci Schuett came into run for Olson. Hannah Ekse followed with a double, moving Schuett to third.

Morgan Byer followed with a one-out single to center, scoring Schuett and lifting the Yellowjackets to the 15-14 win.

In the game for Perham, all nine starters scored a run, while five players recorded multiple hits.

The Panthers rallied for a game two victory, 12-9, by scoring three seventh inning runs.

The Panthers scored eight runs, in the final four innings, earning the three-run win.

The doubleheader split continues a log jam at the top of the Mid-State Conference. The Yellowjackets and Pequot Lakes are tied at first with both teams holding an 8-2 record. However, the Yellowjackets have swept the Patriots on the season. Detroit Lakes sits at 9-3 in the Mid-State Conference.

The Yellowjackets are now 10-5 overall on the season, while Park Rapids Area moves to 13-5.

The Yellowjackets are on the road for a Mid-State Conference doubleheader with Crosby-Ironton on Monday afternoon.
