The Perham/New York Mills tennis team continued its strong play by defeating the Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines, 6-1, in Wadena on Sept. 28.

Once again, the Yellowjackets showcased their depth winning three of the four singles matches, while taking all three doubles events.

“I thought for the most part we did a really good job getting the momentum right out of the gate,” Perham/NYM head coach Jameson Miller said. “That often makes things easier against a solid, well-coached opponent with a lot of youth like we played today.”

The Wolverines are under the direction of first year head coach Jordan Cresap, a former Perham tennis player. It’s been rare throughout the season that Cresap has had a full line up due to injuries or numbers. The Wolverines delivered with a full lineup, putting the pressure on the Yellowjackets and could be a surprise team come postseason.

The strong start was key for the Yellowjackets as they were able to grab the momentum and put the Wolverines back on their heels in six of the seven matches.

The Yellowjackets have now won seven straight matches since a 2-4 start, improving to 9-4 in dual meets as they hope to secure the No. 2 seed in the Section 8A playoffs.

The Yellowjackets have three more dual meets left, all against section opponents.

Makayla Melvin

Makayla Melvin won in straight sets at No. 1 singles. She cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Lindy Jones. Brianna Schwantz needed three sets but was able to get by Abby Westrum at No. 2 singles. Schwantz won the first set, 6-0, before falling in the second set, 5-7. Schwantz won the deciding third set, 10-7.

Michelle Swyter earned a straight set win at No.3 singles against Madison Packer. Swyter was victorious 6-3, 6-2.

The lone victory for the Wolverines came at No. 4 singles when Marleen Gari defeated Avery Beachy in straight sets. Beachy was defeated 2-6, 0-6.

Avery Beachy

The doubles duos had a lot of success against Wadena-DC with Elle Birkeland and Jojo Winkels winning at No. 1. Birkeland and Winkels defeated Kate Schmidt and Corra Endres in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2.

Jade Lenius and Kierra Radniecki knocked off Jasmyn Wood and Kaylee Ova in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1.

The team of Grace Minten and Emma Bowers won in straight sets at No. 3 doubles when they defeated Madelyn Gallant and Kelly Muckala in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0.

The Yellowjackets return to action with a road date on Monday, Oct. 2 when they take on Staples-Motley in Staples, beginning at 4 p.m.
