The Perham/New York Mills girls tennis teams’ bid for a Section 8A Championship came to a close when they were defeated by East Grand Forks 7-0 in the Section 8A semifinals at Courts Plus in Fargo, N.D., on Oct. 11.
“They are a tough matchup for us and they are a very good team,” Perham/NYM head coach Jameson Miller said. “They do a lot of sliding at doubles, which takes away our offense and they are very well coached in that department. Their singles are very tough, gritty girls. I thought our singles battled them tooth and nail. I told our girls I thought we performed better in our singles matches than we did the previous two times. I think they just had our number this year. It’s tough playing a team when you go 0-2 and the mental part is always tough.”
While the Yellowjackets took a tough loss to end the season, they continued to grow in key spots. Miller said they have lost their top three individual players who have won the most career matches for the program.
“I was very proud of the girls sliding into new roles,” Miller said. “We had Michelle (Swyter) jump up two spots, which was big. Jade (Lenius) took a big jump. She was at No. 2 doubles last year and had a very good season at No. 2 singles. She had two tough matches today. JoJo (Winkels) was at No. 1 doubles last year and this is going to be a good growth for her playing singles this year. It will help her game down the line. Overall, I like this team. I think this team got along really well and we have a lot of nice kids on the team and I’m really proud of them.”
The Yellowjackets graduate two seniors from this year’s team in Michelle Swyter and Sierra Edvall. Miller said they both played key roles on the team. He said Swyter had some key wins throughout the years and ended on a high note. Miller said Edvall is a vocal person and is one of the glue girls on the team. Miller said she played a very big role for the team.
Jenna Dietrich earned a three-set win over Swyter at No.1 singles. She took the final set 11-9. Maggie Dietrich defeated Jade Lenius at No. 2 singles in straight sets. Brynn Havis defeated JoJo Winkels at No. 3 singles, while Katelyn Farder went the distance to beat Avery Beachy at No. 4 singles.
McKenna Aitchison and Aleah Hangsleben defeated Grace Minten and Kiera Radniecki at No. 1 doubles, while Delaney Aaker and Kendal Rand were victorious over Mirta Vorderbruggen and Malia Groff. Thea Haaven-Farstad and Kate Johnson defeated Kendra Moris and LaVonne Lindberg at No. 3 doubles.
Edvall and Lenius will play in the Section 8A Singles Tournament, which is slated to begin at 11 a.m. on Oct. 12 at Courts Plus. The teams of Winkels/Beachy and Minten/Radniecki will play in the doubles tournament, which begins at 12:30 p.m.
Perham vs. Parkers Prairie
The Yellowjackets opened the Section 8A Tournament with a 7-0 victory over the Parkers Prairie Panthers. The Yellowjackets used a very quick start and raced out to big leads in the majority of their first sets against the Panthers, setting the tone for the match. The starts were something that Miller was pleased with.
“It was good to see them and they are always a tough team. They have very active girls and they get up to the net,” Miller said. “I thought we performed really well. To get a 7-0 against a team of that caliber is very tough to do. I thought they had a very good team and the match was a lot closer than the score indicated.”
Swyter earned a straight set win at No.1 singles over Abby Burquest, while Lenius defeated Megan Arens in three grueling sets at No. 2 singles. JoJo Winkels rebounded from a tough second set defeat to edge Anna Marquardt in three sets. Beachy made quick work of Alli Toyli at No. 4 singles.
Minten and Radniecki defeated Katelyn Velde and Reghan DeBoer at No. 1 doubles, while Groff and Vorderbruggen registered a straight sets win at No. 2. Moris and Lindberg closed out in straight sets at No. 3 doubles over Elizabeth Vogt and Kylie Velde.
