Lakes Area Boxing (LAB) presents an afternoon of amateur boxing Saturday, June 12, at the Perham Area Community Center (PACC) featuring fighters from 18 different gyms and four different states.
Doors open at 3 p.m., with approximately three hours of matches.
Saturday’s main event is the 165-pound Region 4 Championship between Teddy Beaudion of Bemidji Boxing Club and Daveone Olive of St. Cloud Golden Gloves.
According to LAB manager Chris Holt, it will be the first Golden Gloves show in Perham in the modern era.
“I asked all around and got no dice; I even checked out the Callaway Community Center,” said Holt. “I was ready to go to White Earth and use their gym, anywhere in the region.”
The planning stages for these fights came during the early relaxing of COVID guidelines, so locking down a site was difficult in the early going. The construction at Detroit Lakes high school made what had become a regular venue for fights less attractive for both parties with the large crowds that attend Golden Gloves events and the lack of parking currently available.
Holt was visiting Perham and just stopped into the PACC where he quickly found his site after a chat with executive director Leigh Shebeck.
“He was all for it,” said Holt. “They were pretty excited and I’m glad. It’s going to be great. What a great venue.”
The ring will be centered in the front gymnasium with floor seating available and social distancing standards in practice.
“We want to follow the guidelines and protocols,” said Holt.
Everyone working the show will be masked to abide by USA Boxing guidelines. Masks for fans are optional. Any groups planning to attend will be able to sit together.
For the boxers, it is a chance to showcase their skills in the ring after a long year away from competition. The northern Minnesota fighting calendar typically takes place in the winter months, but was changed due to COVID.
Upcoming fights like the Minnesota Silver Gloves tournament at Bemidji high school will be held this summer, July 24-25, rather than the usual dates in December.
“Everybody was antsy to get back in the gym,” said Holt.
Fighters returned in limited capacity back in January. The team has expanded to 15 boxers, many who were bravely working out in near 100-degree temps Thursday, June 10, with a little help from one industrial fan in the LAB gym.
Holt’s boxers are ready to get it on and bring the excitement of amateur boxing to a new venue and a new town.
“We’ve got 14 fights and some of the best fighters in Minnesota,” he said.
LAB has three fighters competing: Quintin Hedlund at 74-pounds; Dalton Bymers at 90-pounds and Kyla Schatz at 124-pounds. Andi Peak of Dion’s Dangerzone is fighting at 114.
Boxing clubs from Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota and Iowa will compete in this sanctioned USA boxing event.
Detroit Lakes high school was the site of the last Golden Gloves show in Minnesota, March 7, 2020, just prior to the shutdown. Holt is still formulating bringing fights back to Detroit Lakes this year, hopefully, this fall. Ralph Anderson Gymnasium has great sight lines for fights and fans have flocked to DLHS for Golden Gloves events.
“That’s a great place for Golden Gloves,” said Holt.
The PACC is located at 620 3rd Avenue SE in Perham. Tickets are available at the door only; $10 adults, $8 students.
