It was a tale of two games when the Perham Buzz split its Lakes Area Independent League game with Alexandria on July 28 at Krueger Field in Perham.
Game one was a smooth pitcher’s duel between Maddux Kovash and Tate Breutkreutz with Perham sneaking out a 3-2 victory. Game two was a slogfest with both team’s struggling to throw strikes as Alexandria earned a 10-1 victory over Perham.
A unique double play benefited Perham in the sixth inning, giving them a 3-2 lead late. With runners on first and third, Rian Solberg hit a hard-shot ground ball to first. The first baseman stepped on first and fired to second to get the second out. However, since it wasn’t a force out, Stephen Lindberg, the runner on third scored the eventual go-ahead run.
Kovash worked around a two-out single to close out the win in the seventh inning for Perham.
Kovash allowed two runs on seven hits. He struck out five and walked one. A pair of errors allowed a pair of Alexandria runs to score in the fifth inning, which was the only inning Kovash battled any trouble.
The Buzz started the scoring in the second inning. Lindberg led the frame off with a single and moved up on a single by Mick Meyer. He eventually scored on a wild pitch, making it 1-0.
After Alexandria scored two in the fifth, Perham came back with two in the sixth. Andrew Smith, Lindberg and Meyer singled to start the one-out rally. Perham was able to squeak the run across after the RBI single from Meyer.
Breutkreutz took the loss for Alexandria. He allowed three runs on six hits. He struck out six and walked one in five and a third innings of work.
Chas Melvin, Smith, Lindberg and Alex Stoll each had a hit in the game. Meyer had two hits and drove in a run for Perham.
Errors and walks destroyed the pace of the second game. Perham committed eight errors and issued seven walks. Alexandria pitchers combined to walk 10 batters which Perham was unable to take advantage of in the loss.
Alexandria struck for three in the first inning with a two-out rally. Breutkrautz delivered a two-run single, which came after a pair of Perham errors and a pair of walks.
Alexandria added to its lead with a run in the second and two more in the third. Perham finally struck on an RBI single by Meyer.
Alexandria added a run in the fourth, two more in the fifth and another in the seventh for the 10-1 win.
Jack Allen earned the win on the mound. He yielded one run on two hits. He fanned nine batters but walked seven in his effectively wild four innings of work. Taylor Jendro pitched two innings of scoreless baseball. He allowed one walk and struck out five. Isaac Peterson pitched a scoreless inning as well. He walked two and struck out three while giving up one hit.
Lindberg took the loss for Perham. He went five innings and allowed nine runs on eight hits. He struck out five and walked five.
Smith pitched two innings of relief and allowed one run on one hit. He struck out two and walked two.
Carter Mulcahy, Kovash and Meyer had hits in the game.
Perham Buzz return to action with a doubleheader on July 30 at Washington Park in Detroit Lakes. First pitch is set for 5 p.m.
