The Perham baseball team started its season undefeated by sweeping a doubleheader with Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton on Thursday, April 22, at Krueger Field in Perham.

The Yellowjackets won the first game of the doubleheader 9-2, and they shut out the Rebels in the second game, winning 12-0.

In the first game, DGF took a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Perham answered back in the third, scoring three runs and taking the lead, which the team would not relinquish. The Yellowjackets offense really came out in the fifth inning, when they scored six runs and increased their lead to 9-1. The Rebels attempted a comeback in the seventh inning but were only able to score one run.

Head coach James Mulcahy said the team made some nice offensive adjustments at the plate. "We started looking for our pitches and did a great job of advancing runners," Mulcahy said. "We had good run production from the middle of the lineup in Ben Shumansky, Rian Solberg, Logan Pulju, and Chas Melvin. Jacob McAllister had a great day from the nine spot."

Even with the decisive game one win, Mulcahy said the Yellowjackets allowed too many DGF batters on base. "But Logan Pulju delivered on the mound when needed," he said. "We had some good relief innings from Finn Diggins."

Melvin was the winning pitcher in Perham's game two shutout. He pitched four innings and allowed just two hits, walking three batters and striking out eight.

One area of concern Mulcahy sees moving forward is addressing specific game scenarios. "Defensively, we were not ready for some game scenarios and we as coaches will address that in practices the next couple of days and as the season progresses," he said.

The Yellowjackets are 2-0 on the season. They travel to Moorhead on Tuesday, April 27, for a 4:30 p.m. start.
