Three Perham Yellowjackets - Logan Pulju, Gage Germolus, and Jack Mensing - hit their first career varsity home runs to help the team in its 14-1 victory in the first game of a doubleheader against Hawley Thursday, April 29, in Hawley. The Yellowjackets also won the second game of the doubleheader by a score of 14-1.

Andrew Smith led off the first game with a single on a line drive to left field. Germolus followed with a home run, putting the Yellowjackets up 2-0. Ben Shumansky hit a double to center field but was held up when Pulju hit a ground out. Chas Melvin reached on an error, and Shumansky scored. Mensing hit his first varsity home run, allowing Melvin to score before the inning ended with a 5-0 lead for the Yellowjackets.

In the second inning, Jacob McAllister led off with a ground ball hit and reached on an error by Hawley's third baseman. He then advanced to second on a passed ball. Smith grounded out, but McAllister was able to advance to third. Germolus hit a double to score McAllister. With two outs, Pulju hit a home run, allowing Germolus to score. Melvin followed with a single, and Mensing doubled on a fly ball, driving in Melvin. Austin Aanenson singled on a line drive and Mensing scored. Rian Solberg popped out to end the inning, leading by a score of 10-0.

Perham scored two more in the third inning. Shumansky doubled on a line drive to center field, and Smith scored, then Pulju singled on a line drive to center, and Shumansky scored before the inning ended on a strikeout by Melvin.

In the fifth inning, Smith doubled on a fly ball to center field, and Germolus followed with a single, driving Smith home. The final run was scored when Melvin ground into a fielder's choice and Germolus scored.

Hawley scored its only run in the bottom of the fourth inning, scoring on an RBI single.

Pulju was the winning pitcher for the Yellowjackets, pitching three innings, allowing one hit and striking out one batter. Caden Schossow relieved him for three innings, giving up two hits and one run and striking out two.

In game two, the Yellowjackets jumped to an early lead, scoring eight runs in the first inning. Lead-off batter Smith singled on a line drive to center field. Germolus was hit by a pitch, advancing Smith to second. Pulju grounded into a fielder's choice, advancing Smith to third. Mensing then singled on a hard ground ball to centerfield, driving in Smith and Pulju. Rian Solberg hit a double on a fly ball to center field, driving in Mensing and Melvin. McAllister followed with a single, and Solberg scored. Mason Schepper doubled on a line drive to left field, allowing McAllister to score.

Smith had a single on his second plate appearance of the inning, which drove in Schepper. Germolus hit a pop fly single, and Smith scored his second run of the inning. The inning ended when Shumansky grounded out, but not until the Yellowjackets had scored eight runs.

Perham added two more runs in the second inning. Mensing scored on a ground out by Solberg, and Melvin scored on a fly ball double by McAllister.

In the third inning, Mensing hit his first varsity home run, driving in Ben Shumansky and Pulju to make the score 13-1 Yellowjackets. Later in the inning, McAllister tripled on a fly ball to center field, allowing Melvin to score.

Schossow was the starting pitcher for the Yellowjackets, and he earned the win. He pitched three innings, giving up two hits and one run while walking one batter and striking out two. He was relieved by Austin Aanenson, who pitched one inning and struck out two. Ashton Detloff then came in for one inning, walking one and striking out one in the game.

Hawley scored its only run in the second inning.

The wins bring the Yellowjackets record to 4-1 on the season.
