The Perham Yellowjackets stole the lead late and defeated Hermantown 15-10 Saturday, May 1, in Hermantown. The game was tied at nine in the sixth inning when Austin Aanenson doubled and drove in a run, giving the Yellowjackets the lead.
Hermantown jumped to an early lead, scoring six runs in the second inning. The Yellowjackets were having none of that, responding with seven runs in the fourth inning. Andrew Smith, Ben Shumansky, and Chas Melvin each hit singles, Gage Germolus was walked, and Logan Pulju doubled.
Austin Schmelz was the winning pitcher for the Yellowjackets, going three and two-thirds innings, giving up four runs on six hits ad striking out four batters. Aanenson came in to relieve Schmelz and threw two innings to earn the save. Pulju started the game for Perham, lasting one and one-third innings, allowing one hit and six runs and striking out two batters.
Perham had 17 hits in the game and didn't commit any errors. The team also had seven stolen bases in the game.
The second game was a rescheduled game against Duluth East. The Yellowjackets managed to steal the lead late to defeat the Greyhounds 9-7. The game was tied at six in the top of the ninth when Perham's Jacob McAllister singled and drove in a run.
The Yellowjackets took the lead first in the second inning when Ben Shumansky scored on a fly ball by McAllister. The Greyhounds tied it up in the bottom of the second and took the lead in the third inning. In the top of the fourth inning, Perham tied it up again when Solberg scored on a passed ball.
Perham added two more runs in the top of the fifth on a single by Shumansky. Smith and Pulju scored, bringing the lead to 4-2 for the Yellowjackets. In the bottom of the fifth, the Greyhounds cut into the Yellowjackets lead, scoring one run. In the top of the sixth inning, Smith doubled on a line drive to left field, allowing Germolus and Melvin to score. Duluth East evened things up in the bottom of the sixth inning, scoring three runs on a triple and single.
The Yellowjackets scored three runs in the ninth, making the score 9-6. The Greyhounds tried to come back in the bottom of the ninth and did score one run, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Yellowjackets.
The team improves to 6-1 on the season. The Yellowjackets host Barnesville at 4 p.m. Thursday, May 6, for a doubleheader at Krueger Field.
