The Perham Buzz split a doubleheader with Detroit Lakes Thursday, July 8, losing the first game 5-3 and winning the second game 14-12 at Krueger Field in Perham.
In the first game, Perham fell behind early when Detroit Lakes scored three runs in the second inning on a single by Trevor Schnathorst and a single by Mason Omberg. Detroit Lakes added another run in the sixth before the Buzz finally got on the board in the bottom of the sixth inning, when Maddux Kovash hit a solo home run for Perham.
Detroit Lakes got its final run in the top of the seventh inning, when Blaine Henderson hit a line drive single to centerfield, driving in Schnathorst. Perham rallied in the bottom of the seventh when Andrew Smith hit a ground ball and reached on an error, allowing Evan Kovash to score. In the next at-bat, Ben Shumansky singled to right field, driving in Jacob McAllister. That was where the rally ended for a final score of 5-3.
Caden Schossow took the loss for the Buzz. He allowed three hits and three runs over one inning before Gage Germolus came out of the bullpen in relief. Germolus gave up six hits and two run over six innings, walking six and striking out four batters.
Shumansky had a solid night at the plate, garnering three hits and driving in one run.
Both teams' offenses came alive in the second game, but the team's roles seemed to be reversed as Perham ended up with the 14-12 victory.
Both teams scored one run in the first inning. Shumansky drove in McAllister on a ground ball single to left field for Perham. Detroit Lakes took the lead in the top of the third inning, adding four runs to take a 5-1 lead. However, the Buzz answered right back in the bottom of the third inning, scoring seven runs. Smith hit a solo home run, Shumansky singled on a 1-0 count, scoring one run. Mensing then singled on a 2-0 count, scoring a run, before Aanenson doubled on a 1-1 count, scoring a run. Mason Schepper drew a walk, which also allowed a run to score.
Kovash got the win on the mound for Perham. He gave up nine runs on ten hits over five innings, striking out five and walking one. Smith threw two innings in relief out of the bullpen and recorded the last six outs to earn the save for the Buzz.
Korth took the loss for Detroit Lakes, allowing nine hits and 13 runs while striking out three over five innings.
In addition to Smith's home run in the third, Shumansky went deep in the sixth inning. He had another good game at the plate, going 4-4 with two runs and three RBI in the contest. Perham also had nine stolen bases in the game; McAllister led the team with three.
The Perham Buzz travel to Fergus Falls on Tuesday, July 13, for a doubleheader starting at 5 p.m.
