Pelican Rapids holds off Perham in conference clash

A second half run by the Perham Yellowjackets was not enough as the Pelican Rapids Vikings earned a 73-59 Heart O’Lakes Conference girls basketball victory on Feb. 20 in Pelican Rapids.

The two teams split the season series and the loss extended Perham’s losing streak to five straight games.

Pelican Rapids’ Adriana Torres and Perham’s Gabby DeBoer locked themselves into a battle. Torres, who recently joined the 1,000 point club, led the way with 29 points. DeBoer paced the Yellowjackets, finishing the game with 25 points. DeBoer scored 15 of her 25 points in the second half, trying to help the Yellowjackets dig out of a first half hole. Deboer did a nice job of getting to the free throw line in the game. She hit 11 of her 15 free throw attempts.

Katie Johnson provided a spark off the bench for Perham as well. She connected on four 3-pointers. She finished with 12 points. Kolbey Bormann added nine points for Perham.

Along with Torres’ 29 points, Greta Tollefson added 11 and Kaylie Isaman ended with 10 points. Whenever the Yellowjackets made a run at the Vikings, the Vikings had an answer. The Vikings closed out the game at the free throw line where they were 20 of 28 for the game and 10 of 16 in the second half.

The loss dropped the Yellowjackets to 13-12 overall and 4-7 in the Heart O’Lakes Conference. Pelican Rapids improved to 14-9 overall and 7-4 in the conference.

Perham closes the regular season with a home contest against Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton. It’s the final regular season game for both teams. The Rebels are 21-4 and coming off a 64-50 defeat to Hawley, which sealed the conference title for Barnesville.
