The Perham Yellowjackets closed the first half on a 9-0 run to break open a close game and doubled-up visiting Detroit Lakes in the second half of a 70-36 boys basketball victory at The Hive Thursday, Jan. 14.
The Yellowjackets opened the game on a 13-5 run. Detroit Lakes closed to a two-possession game at 17-11 on back-to-back buckets by Nate Cihak and Zach Oistad with eight minutes remaining in the opening half.
Points were scarce for both teams for four minutes.
The Lakers got as close as three points trailing 21-18 with two minutes remaining in the half.
Perham attacked from the arc late and found success getting a pair of three-point baskets from Soren Anderson and another by Caden Schossow to take an advantage of a dozen points into halftime.
Seven minutes into the second half, Perham led comfortably 47-27 and finished the game on a 23-9 pace to win handily.
Senior Finn Diggins led all scorers with 18 points. Aside from one three-pointer, Diggins was dominant down low.
Anderson had 14 points and pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds to record a double-double.
Elijah Morris scored 11 points.
Oistad was the lone Laker in double figures with 13 points.
Perham outrebounded DL 41-25.
The Lakers made 10 of 21 free throws (48 %), while the Jackets were 10-12 (83 %).
Perham (1-0) begins a six-game road trip at Thief River Falls Saturday, Jan 16. Perham will not play at home again until Thursday, Feb. 11 against Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton, the first of a seven-game home stand.
