Perham-The Perham Yellowjackets held off a late Pequot Lakes’ rally on Saturday evening, to pick up a 55-52 victory in boys basketball at the Prairie Wind Middle School gymnasium. The Patriots had two opportunities to tie the game in the closing seconds, however, 3-point attempts by Brandon Hehir and CJ Borleis were off the mark. The Yellowjackets had three players finish in double figures. Jenson Beachy finished with 16 points, while Sam Muer added 15. Jaden Anderson finished the game with 12 for the Yellowjackets. “We played hard. We were down at half and coach said we needed to pick it up, have energy, rebound and we have to guard,” Anderson said. “We came out and we did that. We did a lot better than the first half. In the first half, we gave up a lot of shots and a lot of 3-pointers. We did a lot better at that in the second half.” Perham was playing its second game in as many nights and at the beginning it showed, especially on the defensive end of the floor. Connor Davich helped Pequot Lakes race out to a sizeable lead early. The Patriots built up an 18-11 lead with Davich scoring the team’s first 13 points. Davich finished with 15 points, all coming in the first half. “I thought we started really slow. We didn’t play good defense early,” Perham Head Coach Dave Cresap said. “They took advantage of things that we were doing defensively. We had to make some adjustments.” After the Patriots built the lead to 11, 24-13, the Yellowjackets responded after a time out. Beachy hit a 3-pointer to start the Yellowjacket offense. Muer attacked the basket, scoring eight straight points to cut it to two, 26-24. “Muer is our go-to guy when we need him. He is a guy that can put it on the deck or shoot the jump shot. He did that in the middle of the first half,” Cresap said. “We started to make some 3’s. I thought Beachy, Christian Weis and Jaden Anderson really played well.”
A quick basket by Jack Kreitz extended the lead but Jaden Anderson hit a momentum changing 3-pointer to cut the lead to one, 28-27, at the half. The Yellowjackets made some adjustments, taking the baseline drive away from the Patriots in the second half. “About the middle of the second half, we started being more aggressive. As a coaching staff, we told our guys to square up in the corners instead of forcing them to the baseline,” Cresap said. “We didn’t give them the angles to drive and create rotations on us. I think that really helped and our defense really picked up. At the end of the game they made some deep 3’s but we still had a hand up in their face. They were making tough shots and that’s part of the game.” Davich, who scored 15 points in the first half, was slowed in the second half. Anderson and the Yellowjackets kept him off the board. “He is a great player. It was difficult,” Anderson said. “It was hard work. I didn’t get every box out and props to him. He is a great player.” The Yellowjackets raced out to a 37-30 lead to start the second half. Beachy and Weis hit 3-pointers to key the 10-2 run. Perham built the lead up to 11 after a 3-pointer from Beachy. Borleis hit a 3-pointer and Hehir hit two 3-pointers to cut the lead to two, 54-52. The Patriots had a chance to tie the game; however, it was Beachy that drew an offensive foul against Pequot Lakes. “That was a big play by Beachy. He saw it coming down the lane,” Cresap said. “He stepped up and knew he was going to take a big hit. He got hit pretty hard, got the offensive foul, took a basket away and we got possession of the ball. It was really a super play.” Anderson hit a free throw to stretch the Perham lead to three, 55-52, with 26.6 seconds to go. A substitution late in the contest paid off for Perham. Cresap brought in Zack Tellinghuisen off the bench, and he played a key role in the final seconds of the game. “On the last play of the game, he (Tellinghuisen) was told to help on the double screen on Hunter Larson,” Cresap said. “He came off the double and Tellinghuisen hit it just right. Muer was able to go with Borleis and deflect the ball across half court. Those are the little things that the fans don’t see. Those two kids made big plays to win that game.” The half court heave by Borleis was off to the right as time expired, giving Perham the 55-52 victory. Davich led the way for the Patriots with 15 points, while Borleis finished with 12. The Yellowjackets improve to 5-6 overall with the win. Pequot Lakes falls to 7-6 overall. The Yellowjackets are back at home on Tuesday, Jan. 13. They will take on Park Rapids Area at 7:30 p.m. at the Prairie Wind Middle School gymnasium. “We are starting to make progress,” Cresap said. “We are getting better and we are starting to take big strides defensively. That’s where I see us really gaining. We are starting to rebound really well. Now, we need to clean up the offense a little bit. We were really patient tonight. I thought we took care of the basketball with nine turnovers tonight, that’s really an exceptional game against their pressure and their traps.
