Perham-The Perham Yellowjacket boys basketball team used strong defense and a breakout performance from Christian Weis on their way to a 52-39 victory on Friday, Jan. 9 at the Prairie Wind Middle School gymnasium. Weis led all scorers with 17 points. For much of the early season, Weis was getting good looks at the basket, however, the shots were not falling. That wasn’t the case for Weis against Frazee. Weis was five-of-eight from the field, while hitting two 3-pointers in the win. “I knew I had to have a break out night sometime and it felt like tonight was the night,” Weis said. “I knew we had to come out ready to go, focused and it just went in.”
Along with his offensive performance, Weis was tasked with defending Frazee’s Matt Tangen. Weis held Tangen to 10 points on the night. “We knew we had to shut down (Matt) Tangen and (Brady) Bellefeuille,” Weis said. “Tangen was my job. I just did my best and it worked out.” Weis hit five of six from the free throw line, but, it was his defense that really made Perham Head Coach Dave Cresap happy. “He got some confidence. It only takes one shot once in a while for a kid to get his confidence. He made that first one and pretty soon he made a couple of more. Even the ones that he missed were right there,” Cresap said. “I’m really happy for him, because he struggled a little bit from the field. His defense was so solid on that Tangen kid.” Jenson Beachy added 14 points in the game as well. He sparked a late run in the first half. He connected on two free throws and followed that up with a 3-pointer of a steal. “Beachy made a super nice play at the end of the half to knock down a 3-pointer, that gave us that nice lead at halftime,” Cresap said. “He has an offensive mind as an eighth grader. He doesn’t get scared of much. He will play fearless. He will make a mistake or two, but then he will make three or four nice plays. He is doing a lot of things for his youth and shooting the ball very well.” [[{"type":"media","view_mode":"media_large","fid":"1447042","attributes":{"alt":"","class":"media-image","height":"450","typeof":"foaf:Image","width":"480"}}]] Frazee’s Austin Torma, Matt Tangen and Matt Daggett gave the Hornets the early 8-2 lead. The Yellowjackets answered the call with 10 straight points to take a 12-8 lead. The run was capped off by back-to-back 3-pointers from Weis and Austin King. “I thought we started a little slow and Frazee has one of their better squads in a long time. They are well coached and they have a nice squad,” Cresap said. “They came out at us early. We finally settled in and started to make some shots. Some kids that hadn’t played as well stepped up and made some plays tonight.” King’s return from illness has given the Yellowjackets much needed depth off the bench. King finished the game with seven points for Perham. “He was sick for 14 days and never got to play. It’s taken him awhile to get in a groove and now he is starting to find it,” Cresap said. “He is competing harder, getting after loose balls and doing things like that, which we ask him to do. Tonight, he made a few key shots.” After Frazee ended the run with a basket from Bellefeuille, Beachy answered with another 3-pointer. The Yellowjackets continued to stretch the lead, taking an 11-point halftime lead. Beachy and Tangen exchanged 3-pointers to start the second half, but scoring was sparse in the first six minutes of the half. Bellefeuille hit a 3-pointer to pull the Hornets within eight, which would be the closest the Hornets would get in the second half. Bellefeuille led the way for Frazee. He finished the game with 12 points, while hauling in a team high of five rebounds. The Yellowjackets held the Hornets to 21 second half points. “Our defense has been pretty solid in the last 3-4 games. I’m really happy with where we are coming there,” Cresap said. “We still have a little work to do offensively. We had some shots that we missed again that could have broken the game open. Give some credit to Frazee because they played pretty good defense against us. That was a nice win for us. We knew it was going to be a war against them.” The Yellowjackets move to 4-6 overall, while Frazee falls to 4-8.
