The Perham Yellowjackets worked through their struggles and used a late surge to pull out a 53-39 girls basketball victory over Thief River Falls on Dec. 11 at the Hive.

The Yellowjackets broke a 37-37 tie with a basket from Katie Johnson and never looked back. The hoop was part of an end of the game 17-2 run and was part of an 14-0 run to take control of the second half.

The Yellowjackets struggled from the field for much of the contest, but their defensive pressure allowed them to keep it close for much of the game until they pulled away late in the second half.

Johnson led all Perham scorers with 13 points. Mesa Schultz added 12 points and Lacy Richter finished with nine.

Schultz was an imposing presence inside when she grabbed nine rebounds and recorded five blocked shots. Johnson grabbed seven boards and had four steals.

The Yellowjackets built up an 18-9 first half lead as they hit four early 3-pointers, but struggled to just four of 20 from beyond the arc. Richter hit for nine first half points. The Prowlers slowly worked their way back into the contest and held a 21-20 lead at the break.

Perham outscored Thief River Falls 33-18 in the second half, with difference coming on the 17-2 run.

Perham moved its season mark to 3-2 overall. The Yellowjackets return to action with a Heart O’Lakes conference tilt against Breckenridge on Dec. 13 at 7:30 p.m. at the Hive.
