The Perham boys cross country team entered the season with a large bulls-eye on its back after winning two straight Class A Championships and receiving the No. 1 ranking for the 2019 season. The Yellowjackets showcased why that was the case when they finished third at the annual St. Olaf Showcase on Aug. 29 in Northfield, Minn.
The Yellowjackets were the top Class A team by a wide margin when they came in with 161 points, 15 points behind second place Eastview. Mounds View won the team title with a team score of 84. Buffalo was fourth, followed by Hopkins in fifth. Forest Lake was sixth, while Jefferson was seventh. Staples-Motley, the closest Class A team, finished in eighth place, followed by Lakeville North and Maple Grove to round out the top 10 at the annual showcase.
Staples-Motley's Emmet Anderson was the race winner with a finishing time of 15 minutes and 44.5 seconds. He was followed by Jefferson's Colden Longley with a time of 15:45.8. Perham's Brandon O'Hara finished in third place when he crossed the line with a time of 16:03.7. Math and Science Academy's Harris Anderson was fourth at 16:08.1, while Staples-Motley's Hunter Klimek was fifth at 16:12.4.
The Perham depth continues to be one of its keys to their success. While Staples-Motley was able to get two runners inside the top five, Perham had three in the top 25 and its next four runners finish ahead of the third runner for Staples-Motley.
Bailey Evenson finished in 22nd place with a time of 17:01.9, he was the second Yellowjacket across the finish line. Jakob McCleary finished in 25th place with a time of 17:04.0.
Tesfaye Young was the fourth runner across the line and he finished in 51st place with a time of 17:45.7. He was followed by CHase Belka in 60th place, to round out the scoring for Perham. Belka finished with a time of 17:56.5.
Owen Werner was right on Belka's heels, finishing in 61st place with a time of 17:57.3. Rounding out the field for Perham was Carson Hespe, who finished with a time of 18:19.1 for 92nd place.
The Yellowjackets are back in action on Aug. 6 with the annual Minnesota State University-Moorhead's Twilight meet at Bluestem in Moorhead.
