The Perham girls cross country team wanted to get out front after finishing second at the Perham Invitational. The Yellowjackets did just that in convincing fashion when they ran to their 16th straight Heart O'Lakes Conference Championship at Northland Community College in Thief River Falls on Oct. 8.
Perham head coach Jeff Morris said the team was poised to extend the streak.
"The girls have battled sickness over the last few weeks and with that in the rear view mirror, they had new adversity to overcome in windy and soggy conditions," Morris said. "The girls went straight to the front of the pack and led a charge to another conference title."
Perham turned the event into an internal competition among itself. The top four spots belonged to the Yellowjackets and all seven earned HOL All-Conference honors.
Perham finished first with 19 points, while Hawley was second with 69 points. West Central Area was third with 71 points, while Pelican Rapids was fourth with 92 points and in fifth was Lake Park-Audubon with 119 points.
Perham's Aspen Rohde captured her first HOL individual championship with a time of 20 minutes and 19.2 seconds. She was followed by Quincy Anderson, who came in second with a time of 20:32.1. Mya Morris followed in third place with a time of 20:36.8. Liz Birkeland was the fourth Yellowjacket across the line. Birkeland finished with a time of 20:40.6. Hawley's Lily Peterson broke up the Perham parade at the front of the pack. She finished with a time of 20:45.4 for fifth place.
Perham's Kaia Starzl rounded out the top 10. She finished with a time of 21:09.8. Abby Tweeton finished in 11th place with a time of 21:13.2. Lauryn Rustad grabbed the final HOL All-Conference spot with a time of 21:43.7 for 15th place.
The Yellowjackets have one final tune-up before the Section 8A Championships on Oct. 25 when they compete at Bemidji on Oct. 15.
