Divers, Mursu lead the way for Perham/NYM at True Team

The Perham/New York Mills/Henning swimming and diving team competed in the Section 8A True Team Championships on Oct. 12 at the Robert J. Elkington Middle School Pool in Grand Rapids, Minn.

The Yellowjackets finished in eighth place in a strong field of competition. Grand Rapids captured the team title with 1423.5 points, while Detroit Lakes was second with 1261.5 points. Park Rapids Area followed in third place with Bemidji in fourth and Fergus Falls in fifth, rounding out the top five.

The true team event is a unique event where every participant records points toward their team score in each event. The Yellowjackets received a pair of strong performances from their divers at the True Team meet. Dena Fischer finished first and Madison Ruther came in eighth place for Perham/NYM/Henning. Fischer captured the title with a score of 402.30 points. Ruther finished with 282.85 points. The duo recorded 57 of the team's points in the meet.

Irene Mursu had a strong meet as well for Perham/NYM/Henning when she captured a pair of top 10 finishes for the Yellowjackets. She was sixth in the 200 individual medley and ninth in the 100 backstroke.

The 200 medley relay team of Olivea McDonald, Irene Mursu, Lucy Schultz and Ellie Smith came in 13th at 2:14.87 to start off the swimming portion of the meet. Schultz came in 16th of the 200 freestyle at 2:29.53, while Mursu captured a sixth place finish in the 200 individual medley at 2:30.87. Elle McDonald was 26th at 32.63 in the 50 freestyle for the Yellowjackets.

Oakley McNair finished with a time of 1:10.34 in the 100 freestyle, while McDonald was 14th in the 500 freestyle at 6:24.84. The team of Mursu, Elle McDonald, Smith and Olivea McDonald came in 12th at 1:58.62 in the 200 freestyle relay.

Mursu followed with a ninth place finish in the 100 backstroke when she finished with a time of 1:11.17. Olivea McDonald finished in 16th place in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:25.38.

The Yellowjackets closed out the meet with a 19th place finish in the 400 freestyle relay behind the team of McNair, Jasmyn Olson, Lucie Meyer and Schultz at 4:50.71.

The Yellowjackets returned to action with at the University of Minnesota-Morris when they competed against Minnewaska Area and Morris Area on Oct. 15.
