Expectations are high this season for the Perham volleyball team.

Head Coach Dan Christenson returns five starters from last year's 8AA South Subsection runners-up.

Strong leadership from seniors Kelli Meehl, Kaylan Huber, and Mary Guck, will compliment some talented juniors, Katrina Moenkedick, Becky Stoll, Brooke Mickelson, and Lexy Karvonen.

Perham lost only Elisa Moenkedick to graduation last year.

"It should make for a competitive season in both the Heart O' Lakes conference and the 8AA Section tournament," Christenson said.

Christenson, in his ninth year, hopes to build on a young team that gained experience after a 13-12 season last year.

Eryn Anderson-Moser, Jill Walter and Mike Peterson complete an experienced coaching staff.

Returning letter winners include seniors Meehl, Huber and Guck, juniors Stoll, Karvonen and Mickelson. Junior Rayna Jacobson and sophomore Miranda Lockhart will also see playing time on the varsity squad.

The Yellowjackets gained valuable playoff experience last season that will aid this year's play after pulling off upsets against the number two and three playoff seeds before losing to eventual champs Wadena-Deer Creek.

According to Chirstenson, Wadena-Deer Creek, D-G-F and Hawley will challenge Perham in Section 8AA, while the Yellowjackets, Rebels and Nuggets will fight in out in the Heart O' Lakes Conference.

"We hope to continue where we left off. It should be an exciting season."

Due to the overwhelming response and success from last year, Perham Volleyball will again be clad in pink as they host a "Cancer Awareness Match" with Frazee, Tuesday, October 5, with all proceeds going to the Perham Schools Relay for Life team.

"We saw an opportunity to do something a little different and raise awareness for an important cause," said Christenson.
