The Perham Yellowjackets allowed an early lead in Friday’s game against the Pequot Lakes Patriots which led them to fall in a 21-14 loss.
“They had a couple big plays in the air and ran a fake punt for a 60 some yard touchdown,” Yellowjacket head coach Kyle Knutson said. “We had some breakdowns and they got up early.”
Pequot Lakes’ scoring started in the first quarter when Pequot’s senior quarterback, Bode Magnuson made a 39-yard run to set up the first Patriot touchdown. Magnuson made an 11-yard touchdown pass to Alex Morgan.
Magnuson rocketed from his punting position again in the second scoring again for the Patriots on a 71- yard tough down run. Magnuson found Morgan again in the second half drive making the score 21-0 Pequot Lakes. He rushed for 158 yards and threw for 109 yards.
Perham managed two touchdowns in the 4th quarter. Levi Richter started the scoring for the Yellowjackets taking a 17 yard pass from Josh Peterson. Peterson later made a yard long run bringing the score to 21-14.
Perham finished off the game with 304 yards of offense on 73 plays. Pequot gained 333 yard on 69 plays.
Peterson stepped into the game for starting quarterback Colton Hackel.
“Josh Peterson did a nice job coming in the game as QB,” Knutson said. “The offense moved the ball both on the ground and in the air the last quarter to put us in a position to win the game. We just came up short.”
Next up for the Yellowjackets is Detroit Lakes at home for “The Battle of the Paddle.”
“They have kept the paddle the past two years so we are aiming to take that back,” Knutson said. “They are a good squad so we will have to fix some things this week in practice an do some film education prior to the Lakers coming to town.”
