Snow this early in the season is a pleasant surprise for area snowmobilers. Trail conditions in the area have snow, are groomed and looking good. The Otter Trail Riders Snowmobile Club has 138 miles of trails that connect several small towns and communities in Otter Tail County. The towns include Perham, New York Mills, Bluffton, Ottertail, Richville, and Dent. The club also has spurs leading to Wolf Lake, Vergas, and Henning.
Snowmobile training
DNR Snowmobile Safety Training will be held Dec. 27, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at New York Mills High School. Cost is $6 per person and the class is limited to 40 students. The class is for those ages 11 and older (must be 12 years old by May 1, 2008). Pre-registration is required in the School District Office.
Co-sponsored by the Otter Trail Riders Club, this course covers operating procedures, machine maintenance, rules and regulations, accident prevention, outdoor survival, environmental awareness and code of ethics.
Both a written test and a riding performance test must be passed. Minnesota law says all residents born after Dec. 31, 1979, must have a safety certificate to operate a snowmobile anywhere in the state.
